In the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s the Mexican cinema enjoyed an unprecedented era of quality and beauty. Stars like María Félix, Pedro Infante, and Jorge Negrete enchanted audiences and inspired fellow artists around the world. María Félix, who has been referred to as "the most beautiful face in the history of Mexican cinema," was immortalized in portraits by such artists as Diego Rivera and Leonora Carrington and celebrated by poets like Efraín Huerta and Renato Leduc. As a recent Time Magazine article said of Pedro Infante:

"He was the Crosby, the Sinatra, the Elvis of Mexico. The top-of-the-charts love ballads he sang in films sent 10 million senoritas into ecstasy; he crooned, they swooned. The movies he starred in were among the most popular in Latin America; and one, the 1948 Nosotros los pobres...! (We the Poor) is the biggest hit in Mexican film history. He anchored cowboy comedies, historical-political epics and dozens of vein-popping romantic melodramas. He played virginal student-priests (in El Seminarista —The Seminarian) and rogues who at the crack of dawn rose from a lady's bed and jumped out the window (in Dicen que soy mujeriego —They Call Me a Ladies' Man). The good-hearted heroes he played fought, they cried and, always, they sang."

Who better to bring this magical era back to life than modern-day mariachi icons Mariachi Cobre?

One of the nation’s most respected mariachi ensembles, Mariachi Cobre was founded in 1971 by Randy Carrillo, his brother Steve, his friend Mack Ruiz, and musical arranger, Frank Grijalva. Since 1982, Mariachi Cobre has delighted visitors to the internationally famous EPCOT Center Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Mariachi Cobre has cultivated very special relations with Mariachi Vargas and Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, and have been accompanists for renowned artist such as Linda Ronstadt, Lucha Villa, Lola Beltran, Ana Gabriel, Guadalupe Pineda, and Julio Iglesias.

Joining these luminaries is the Bay Area’s own beloved folkloric dance company, Los Lupeños de San José. Los Lupeños has been delighting audiences and educating students since 1969, which makes this concert a grand celebration of 40 years of artistry and dedication to the beauty of traditional Mexican dance!
