This year’s San José Mariachi and Mexican Heritage Festival was conceived by Artistic Director Linda Ronstadt as a tribute to the Heroes of our Heritage, and especially to the legacy of San José’s hometown hero, Cesar Chavez. This theme is embraced in this very special musical tribute by world-renowned artists who have spent their careers proudly living up to Cesar’s message – Los Lobos and Carlos Santana.

Los Lobos
A true American hero, Cesar Chavez was a civil rights, Latino, farm worker, and labor leader; a religious and spiritual figure; a community servant and social entrepreneur; a crusader for nonviolent social change; and an environmentalist and consumer advocate. The legacy that he left of the power of the individual to change an unjust system and his famous cry “si se puede” have been taken up by voices of all races, generations, and walks of life, including such influential and famous voices as Los Lobos, Linda Ronstadt, and Carlos Santana.

Join these stars as they use their music to evoke and celebrate the life of a man that Senator Robert F. Kennedy noted, was "one of the heroic figures of our time."

Carlos Santana

Since they began as Los Lobos Del Este Los Angeles in 1973, Los Lobos has evolved into a respected artistic entity searching for themes and topics that are an interpretive pulse of our times. Using musical molds built on the blues, rockabilly, jazz, Latin and their own Mexican-American heritage, Los Lobos have never beat their fans over the head with politics or agendas. Instead, they subtly challenge them with conscience-raising songs and thought-provoking lyrics.

Carlos Santana has been reinventing and reshaping the landscape of the known universe's musical culture for close to four decades. A visionary artist with no regards for genre boundaries, Carlos' fluid sound long ago laid claim to the concept of "world music" before the term ever surfaced on pop culture radar. Less publicized, but equally as profound as his artistic legacy, is Santana's long history of social activism and contributions time and funds to humanitarian causes.
